Frequently Asked Questions:

What is ShardlowTennis?

"ShardlowTennis" was founded by Wilbur over twenty years ago. At that time it was called “TEN-S", providing camps, clinics, racquet stringing, and tennis related services. Later, Wilbur was joined by Paul Gaylord, his doubles partner at that time, and the name was changed to “BruiseBrothers Tennis". This successful partnership continued for years until Paul decided to step out of the business. Wilbur changed the name to ShardlowTennis.

Wilbur is certified at the Professional level by both the United States Professional Tennis Association and the Professional Tennis Registry. He has over thirty years of competitive tennis and over thirty-five seasons of successful high school tennis coaching experience. He has been a ranked tournament player in Maine and New England over the years, and has participated on several local, district, sectional and national level NTRP teams up to the 5.0 level.

Why should my child go to a ShardlowTennis Academy ?

Easy...Wilbur is a certified tennis professional with years of experience both as a player and teaching professional. (click on his name for his tennis biography) Wilbur is also a veteran classroom teachers and has his master's degree in Computer Technology in Education. He understands how to deal with children, both in individual and group situations, while maintaining a safe and controlled learning environment. He also understands how to make learning fun using the correct methodology of the "modern" game without sacrificing quality instruction.

All of our instructors are trained by Wilbur to give the individual attention that is needed to promote quality learning. Everyone has fun and learns at a ShardlowTennis Academy tennis camp or clinic, adults included. These are the attributes that are expected in all of our staff.

Every camp has a 4-1 ratio of instructor to student. This allows the individual attention that is needed to increase learning and allows each student to hit the maximum number of balls. We want particpants to be hitting and not standing around.

We use the Dartfish® Video Technology for individual analysis...the same advanced technology used in the 2009 Winters Olympics !!!

Please compare our staff qualifications and staff/student ratio to the other 'top level' labeled camps.

Why should I buy string my racquet or buy equipment from ShardlowTennis?

The prices are reasonable, the service is good, and the quality is guaranteed . As a teaching professional and tournament player, Wilbur is continually trying and testing new gear. Wilbur is certified by the United States Racquet Stringers Association as the only Certified Stringer (CS) and Master Racquet Technician (MRT) in the State of Maine. E-mail to get a quote for certified racquet stringing. Deal with someone who is certified and will give you honest feedback and not just try to sell you the “racquet or string of the month”?
